Everything about the Blue Crab

Often people become very interested in learning about blue crabs.

Curiosity makes us all wonder:

  • What are they?
  • What do they eat?
  • Where do they live?
  • How do they grow?
  • How long do they live?
  • How can you tell a female from a male?

The scientific name is the Callinectes sapidus, translated to mean "beautiful swimmer". The Callinectes sapidus has six legs, two swimming legs and two claws.

It's predators include birds, fish, and other blue crabs. They aren't the pickiest eaters so they will go after whatever is around. They eat organic plant material, snails, fish, clams, shrimp, oysters, worms, etc.
