Crabbing with a Crab Trap

Crabbing with a double ring net is one of the easiest methods and is a preferred method when including children. The most successful locations will be docks and bridges over creeks, marsh or waterways. After dropping the net off the dock, the double ring net lays flat on the bottom of the creek floor. The crab will move over the flat basket to eat the bait. When you pull up the net, it will return to a basket like shape. The crab is unable to escape.

To start, secure a chicken to the inside bottom of the net with a piece of twine. If there is a strong current, attach a small fishing wait to the bottom of the net. Find the hook at the top of the basket-like net. Tie the end of your line to the pot securely. Drop the trap off the dock, and secure the rest of the line to a beam on the dock or bridge. Wait 5-10 minutes. Quickly pull the net up out off the water. If a crab is in the net, use the crab tongs to remove it and place it in the cooler or bucket.
