Crabbing with a Hand Line
A popular way of crabbing is with a hand line. This method consists of a string with bait tied to the end. The bait is secured at one end of the string, while the other end of the string remains in the crabbers hands.
Chicken necks are a popular bait choice for crabbing with a hand line. A slab of chicken necks can be picked up at any grocery store for less than $5.
First, select and appropriate location. String and neck is great for the beach, creeks running into the surf, bays or sounds. The water needs to be easily accessible and semi-calm.
Secure the neck to the string. Step into the water. Throw the line with the chicken neck securely attached as far as possible. Let the line sit for a 5 minutes. Then, slowly pull the string closer to shore over several minutes. The hope is that the crab is hanging onto the meat, not knowing it is being pulled closer to shore. If you see a crab, scoop it up with a net from behind and place it in your bucket or cooler.
