Why is the Saltmarsh so interesting?

The saltmarsh is a wonderful place for crabs to live. It is teeming with wildlife and there is an abundance of food options for crabs. It is a protective environment and it is known as the "nursery to the sea" for growing animals.

This is a very interesting environment, because the plants and animals have adapted to:

  • Changing tides every 12 hours
  • Mix of salt and fresh water (a.k.a. brackish water).
Snails living on spartina grass will climb up each stalk of grass as the tides rise, in order to avoid going underwater. As you can imagine, this is an environment of continuous changes.

Who should you expect to see while visiting the marsh?

  • Great Blue Heron
  • Night Heron
  • Little Blue Heron
  • Fiddler crabs
  • Snails
  • Oysters
  • Clams
  • Fish
  • Barnacles
  • Terrapin Turtles

Scientist believe that 2/3 of the US Saltmarshes are found in the state of South Carolina.
