Steamed Crab

Here is everything you need to know to prepare steamed crab:

Directions
Use a stock pot with a wire basket to prepare steamed crab. These are the same devices used for crawfish parties and Frogmore Stew (aka Lowcountry Boil).

  • Bring 1 gallons of water to a boil.
  • Add one full beer.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of Old Bay Seasoning.
  • Place live crabs one by one in the basket just above the boiling water. The best way to do this is transport each crab from the cooler into the basket with crab tongs. Although the crabs seem dormant while in the cooler, they will get rowdy.
  • Cover the pot and steam for 25 minutes. Crabs will turn pink after being placed in the water and appear rusty red after cooked.

    Crabber's Tip:
Bacteria spread quickly in dead crabs. Although crabs on ice go into a hibernation-like state, they will move frantically before going in the pot of boiling water. If a crab does not move, throw it away. Do not cook a dead crab.
